The Head Quarters of the Uttar Pradesh Police department is located in Allahabad. It has been in existence for the past 136 years. The post of Inspector General of Police was created in the year 1863 after the Police Act came into operation in the year 1861. During the year 1937 a part of the Head Quarter - "The camp office of the IGP" was shifted to Lucknow and a DIG was deputed to supervise the work of PHQ. Mr.R.N.Marsh was the first DIG Headquarters. Later on the post of DIG was upgraded to the rank of IG in 1983 and further upgraded to the rank of ADG in 1992.

The building in which PHQ is situated today is one of the oldest and the finest buildings of Allahabad. It was constructed in 1870. It once used to house the High Court of the United Provinces, till 1916. UPPHQ has the rare distinction of having a precious collection of old documents and seals and copies of the Police Gazette since 1867.

All the work related to Provisioning of Uniform & Accoutrement, motor vehicles, type writers, fax, telephones, computers & other office equipments, Arms & Ammunitions, stationary, allotment of Budget, Proposals for Modernization & strengthening, revision in allocation, pension, construction & maintenance of buildings, welfare of personnel, establishment matters of all the non-gazetted officers & the ministerial cadre, leave & pay slips of the gazetted officers is attended to at the PHQ.
